Brutal Legend Updated Hands-On Impressions

We're only a few weeks off from Brutal Legend's October 13 release, which is a good thing, because every time we've seen this heavy-metal-themed action game, we've walked away more eager than before to get our hands on the finished product. Our most recent look has continued that trend, giving us the opportunity to go hands-on with a few missions we've previously seen only glimpses of and explore the game's open-world setting to see what sort of trouble protagonist Eddie Riggs can get into outside of the main story.

The Crushing Pit is not a friendly place.

The first mission we played had Eddie liberating an army of headbangers from a dungeon called The Crushing Pit, where they've been toiling away by slamming their heads against rock walls. This mission serves as a tutorial to the basics of squad commands, as Eddie (voiced by Jack Black) gains the ability to play a guitar solo that lets him recruit any nearby headbangers into his army. With these metal-head underlings in tow, you can use the directional pad to order them to follow you, wait and defend where you're standing, or charge toward and attack a distant point on the screen. While Brutal Legend is definitely an action game that's heavy on button combo melee attacks, this system lends a nice bit of strategy to the gameplay.

After using Eddie's heavy metal headbangers to defeat a gang of rival hair metal headbangers--think of them as mirror images of your troops, but with pink tiger-stripe pants and white cowboy hats--we made our way down to the bottom of the mines to take on the boss of this place. He belongs to an enemy class called the bouncers, who are giant brutes with tiny heads and fists the size of their entire body. He's the one brainwashing the headbangers into toiling their lives away by sending commands over his radio headset. We started by taking on a bunch of his minions using combo attacks like the powerslide, which lets Eddie sprint and slide (while on fire) into a bunch of enemies like a powerful bowling ball, and the roman candle, which levitates an enemy in the air on a stream of fireworks. The combo system is simple but deep, with quite a few gruesome yet humorous attacks available to you.

After we handled the bouncer boss's minions with ease, he approached us and exclaimed that we'd yet to take on his two most powerful allies: his fists, which bore the names Fear and Pain, misspelled in typically mangled metal fashion. To defeat him, we had to trade in Eddie's usual array of button combo attacks and use the environment to our advantage. Basically, we had to lure the boss underneath buckets of rubble passing overhead and attack at just the right moment so that the rubble would fall on him, sending him tumbling into the lava pits below. Thankfully, his radio headset was salvaged, and we used that to help rescue the rest of the headbangers from their toiling existence and recruit them into Eddie's army, which he'd set up to take on the villainous General Lionwhyte, leader of the hair metal brigade.

You can add to your combat repertoire with double-team attacks, which link up Eddie and anyone fighting in his army.

The next mission took the basics of squad commands and propelled them to the next level with a full-scale stage battle. If you read our impressions of Brutal Legend's multiplayer, then you're already familiar with how stage battles work. In short, they play like a light real-time strategy game: you control Eddie, and you spawn various troops into your army and then lead them into battle while keeping hold of resource points that let you spawn further troops. What we played was the portion of the game that explains how these high-concept battles figure into a game that, up until this point, is more about small one-on-one encounters.

When it becomes clear that General Lionwhyte is going to be sending a huge army of enemies Eddie's way, Eddie conjures up the idea to stage "possibly the greatest rock show of all time." His logic is simple: If he can take on a handful of enemies with just his guitar, then surely an entire rock concert will let him and his friends take on an entire army. These stage battles provide a nice balance to the usual hack-and-slash style of gameplay by expanding the scope a bit by allowing you to capture resource points and use those to spawn more troops into your army. The only part we had a problem with was being able to tell where new waves of enemies were approaching from, as there isn't any sort of map on the game's very minimalist heads-up display.

After that, we had a chance to explore the game's open world--a wild landscape that looks like a collage of metal album covers--to see what sorts of opportunities lie in wait outside of the main story. The game has at least 50 secondary missions that can be triggered by just exploring the world and finding random people looking for help. The first one we found was a lonely and remarkably unintimidating bouncer stationed on a cannon who'd been tasked with keeping Lionwhyte's troops from making it over a mountain pass. Not only is the guy the most docile-looking bouncer in the game (he's modeled after and voiced by Kyle Gass, Jack Black's bandmate in Tenacious D), but he's downright bad at his job. So Eddie agrees to help him out and ease the poor guy's neuroses by going around and targeting enemy troops to be taken out with the cannon.

It's a Tenacious D reunion with Jack Black and Kyle Gass.

In another side mission, we encountered a character voiced by comedian Brian Posehn (Mr. Show, The Sarah Silverman Program), a diehard metal-head who went to high school with the game's creative director, Tim Schafer. This character wanted us to break his record for hunting the most urchins, the porcupine-like critters that roam freely around the gameworld. The reward for beating this mission, and any secondary mission in the game, is fire tributes, which is a currency you can use to upgrade your hot rod and unlock new combat abilities. Who's the merchant you buy these upgrades from? Ozzy Osbourne, of course. You can expect to see him and a host of other metal icons when the final game is released on October 13.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii UK Review

UK, November 19, 2009 - Often, as they say, the best ideas are the simplest ones. When Nintendo made a song and dance about New Super Mario Bros. Wii's brand new four-player mode at the game's official E3 unveiling, the concept was so underwhelming in its obviousness, naysayers thought the company had finally lost the last of its creative marbles.

Now that New Super Mario Bros. Wii is here though, it's hard to think of a more significant revolution for Nintendo's flagship mascot. Every single aspect of the game is open to anywhere between one and four players and it's a brilliant move for Mario's 2D adventures - from its note-perfect execution to the sheer amount of entertainment value the simple tweak offers.

Let's dive straight in: we're guessing everyone here understands the basic concept of a Mario platformer after 20 years of the genre: run left and right, and jump until you reach the end of a level. That's it, no convoluted 'innovations' - it's a formula so unwavering in its purity that literally everyone gets it after ten seconds of staring at the screen. Indeed, after some - admittedly unscientific - focus-testing, we've yet to find a person who hasn't fallen for the game's charms, and it's Nintendo's most joyously inclusive offering yet. That's all the more astonishing given that it doesn't sacrifice anything of the Mario formula in the name of accessibility.

This is a proper Mario platformer through and through and, while the original New Super Mario Bros. played like a love letter to Mario Bros. 3, this Wii iteration has more of a Super Mario World vibe, with its playful ingenuity, chunky environmental hazards and refined power-ups. True, it might not be particularly original - and much of the game will be familiar to anyone who's played one of Nintendo's previous platform classics - but it's infused with the company's trademark design excellence, taking traditional Mario tropes and giving them a subtle new spin.

Mario's new abilities, for instance, are a significant improvement over the DS game's largely superficial inclusions. This time, the likes of the propeller outfit and penguin suit play an integral role in the game, granting abilities that actually give you a tactical advantage when used intelligently - whether that's zipping over troublesome areas, freezing enemies into ice cubes and using them to fell multiple foes or offering greater manoeuvrability underwater. Oh, and Yoshi's back too! It all adds up to a game that's an absolute master class in family-friendly fun, without the design simplification seen in Nintendo's more recent mainstream offerings. Yes, Nintendo might be pushing New Super Mario Bros. Wii's multiplayer focus, but it still sits proudly alongside its predecessors as a bone fide Mario platformer, whether playing with friends or as a solo experience.

But, oh, that four player mode! With a full group of friends in tow, for either story mode or multiplayer-specific extras, New Super Mario Bros. becomes thoroughly compulsive in its hilariously haphazard chaos. Its stroke of absolute genius in story mode is its complete lack of enforced objectives - it's not competitive and it's not cooperative. Instead, each level is a neutral playground that polarizes play styles in constantly shifting directions. With no particular goal - other than to reach the end - it's pretty much a free for all, usually starting off with good-natured camaraderie before nose-diving into vitriolic retribution as the ingenious way characters interact with the world and each other comes to the fore.

Saw Hands-on

April 13, 2009 - A lot of people won't admit to enjoying the Saw movies. Not I. The overacting doesn't bother me. The inane plots are laughable in all the right ways. I don't care how many times they bring back the Jigsaw Killer for unnecessary sequels. Seeing as how the Saw franchise is the highest grossing horror series of all time, I'm definitely not alone. And so I took the announcement of a Saw videogame with mixed emotions. It's always cool to see a franchise you like come to your favorite medium. But then, you have to wonder -- how in the heck can they turn the Saw movies into a game without losing the entire spirit of the series?

The job of bringing Saw to the gaming world went to Seattle based Zombie Studios, a company that has cut its teeth on military shooters and a few licensed projects. For this project, the developer worked closely with the creators of the franchise to ensure that it has the proper feel and fits into the storyline. The game will take place between the first and second films and promises to answer questions about the characters from the first movie. That story, starring Detective David Tapp, will be told through third-person action, exploration and a whole lot of traps.

It takes a special kind of serial killer to come up with traps like this. The game won't open with your traditional tutorial or introductory cutscene. Instead, you're tossed straight into a recognizable trap -- with your life on the line. The player awakes with the infamous reverse bear trap locked on and the clock ticking. As John Williamson, producer and designer for Saw, put it, "Everything [the player] needs to know is on the screen." The spinning analog stick at the bottom appears to make that claim feel a bit superfluous, but as most everyone at the preview event soon learned, there is a bit more than simply following the prompt needed to get out of this trap.

And by a bit more, I mean the first trap in the game is downright confusing. Zombie Studios agreed they might need to make the solution a little more obvious.

Once the solution to the first trap began circulating around the group gathered, we got to see more than the on-screen avatar repeatedly have his head ripped in two. It was then that I was rather pleasantly surprised. There was a puzzle that could only be solved by looking at a mirror at the right angle. Another puzzle harkened back to Saw II with a toilet filled with syringes. And, of course, doors with shotgun traps littered the area. Some doors could only be opened after solving little fuse box puzzles that we're told will keep getting more difficult as you progress through the game. It all felt more like a classic adventure game brought up to date with full exploration and spiffy graphics and less like the generic action brawler that we so often get with licensed games.

The playable demo didn't extend much beyond the opening moments, but we were given a presentation that offered up some more details on what to expect. The game takes place in a run-down asylum, which shouldn't really come as any big surprise. You're not alone though; others playing Jigsaw's games are there as well. Some will have given up all hope and resigned themselves to death. Others will have their own instructions that are contrary to your survival. And some will simply be human traps.

The real suspense, though, should come from Billy the ventriloquist dummy and his cackling instructions. Naturally, he's back and his pre-recorded tapes are littered throughout the game, along with hidden case files, which will offer a bit more insight into the story.

Insert cackling laughter here. The question remains for me though, of exactly how the moral decisions that the Saw movies are known for will be injected into the game. In the movies, the layout is simple. Each victim is given a choice with death as the ultimate punishment for choosing wrong. In a game, there isn't ever a reason to consider anything other than survival. Williamson assured me that moral decisions will indeed be a part of the game, even offering different paths to explore and multiple endings. Every choice has a consequence, we're told. Let's hope that idea holds up through the entire experience.

Saw will arrive on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC alongside the next movie in the franchise this Halloween.

WET Review

September 14, 2009 - Combining a grindhouse film presentation style with Max Payne and Stranglehold-like slow-motion combat mechanics, Artificial Mind and Movement's WET certainly has a promising setup. You play as Rubi Malone, a raven-haired vixen clad in leather armor. Armed with dual pistols, she's as likely to fire bullets as she is to unload curse words and can flip, slide and swing around combat arenas. For the developer the game represents a spark of originality on a resume populated mostly with licensed products and ports, and its release was not always a sure thing. Amidst the shedding of intellectual property as the publishing giant Activision-Blizzard settled into its new skin, the title was let go, picked up earlier this year by Bethesda Softworks. It's a violent, crude, and often inane title -- which fits in neatly with its presentation style and tone -- but unfortunately its gameplay isn't as dynamic as it wants to be, falling flat and failing to sustain the experience.

As Rubi you're thrown into a world of murderers, double-crossers, drug runners, impossible action scenarios, and conspicuously dressed villains. There's a film grain effect skittering across the screen the entire time, which can be turned off, but while active reinforces the B-movie angle of the plot, dialogue, and characters. Rubi is wronged and angry, and the game in an appropriately inelegant manner smashes together pieces of story that move you through a series of combat arenas and quick-time event action sequences.

Borderlands the Fastest Selling New Title of 2009

November 16, 2009 - Texas-based developer Gearbox Software expressed enthusiasm today over the sales of its new, online co-op shooter franchise Borderlands, declaring the title to be the fastest selling new franchise launch of 2009.

"We are extremely excited about the reception that Borderlands has earned and I am personally very proud of the incredible team here at Gearbox for having created video game's first great shooter-looter," said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software.

"I want to thank all of the fans of the game who have bought in with us and I want to thank publishing partner 2k Games for taking a big bet on such an ambitious game and standing by the team here at Gearbox Software as Borderlands grew into a very special game - so bold and rare and fun in its style and design."

Borderlands' NPD numbers were impressive for the month of October. The combined platform sales of the title out performed Sony's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Nintendo's Wii Fit Plus.

Gearbox maintains Borderlands will continue to receive on-going support through various title updates and paid downloadable content.

THQ Sees Record Quarterly Results

July 28, 2009 - THQ saw a record high 77% increase in year-over-year net sales ($243.5 million from $137.6 million) for the June quarter.

As president and CEO Brian Farrell points out, this was due in part by the strong sales of UFC 2009 Undisputed.

"We reported the highest June quarter net sales and net income in our history, driven primarily by the success of our hit title UFC 2009 Undisputed," he said.

"Our first quarter results demonstrate the benefits of our more focused product strategy and aggressive cost management. These record results reflect the hard work and dedication of our employees around the globe."

Farrell added, "Our three recently announced business units - Core Games; Kids, Family and Casual Games; and Online Games - are focused on delivering a strong fiscal 2010 line-up and building our pipeline of games to support THQ's long-term profitability and growth."

THQ also pointed out that UFC 2009 Undisputed was the highest selling game in the US for the June quarter and has shipped 2.9 million units worldwide. Also, more than one million units of Red Faction: Guerrilla were shipped.

Call of Duty Franchise Tops $3 Billion in Sales

November 27, 2009 - Activision announced today the long-standing Call of Duty series has surpassed $3 billion in retail sales worldwide, making it one of the biggest gaming franchises ever.

"Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, Inc. "If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

Since the first release of the original Call of Duty, the franchise has sold over 55 million units worldwide. The latest, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, went on to generate over $500 million in sales in its first week.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 enters the ring

With the release of the well-received fighter UFC 2009 Undisputed, and the announcement of EA's Mixed Martial Arts game, many may have already forgotten the traditional wrestling game, which for troubled publisher THQ represents a quarter of its profits.

When Candice mentioned they should do yoga together, this wasn't exactly what she had in mind.

Today THQ has announced the latest in its string of wrestling games, which to date have sold more than 47 million units worldwide, with WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010. The game, which is due to hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, and DS this autumn, is to be developed in conjunction with toy maker Jakks Pacific, with whom THQ has had something of a love-hate relationship.

The publisher has not given details on gameplay improvements, but has promised to "deliver player freedom never before experienced in the SmackDown vs. Raw franchise." The game's cover will also feature WWE superstars John Cena, Undertaker, Randy Orton, Edge, and Rey Mysterio.

THQ will be unveiling more on the game at the SummerSlam event in LA on August 23, and will be running down a history of the franchise at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Keep an eye on GameSpot's E3 page for more.

Modern Warfare 2 Trade-ins Expected to be Low

November 23, 2009 - It's been close to two weeks since this holiday's most anticipated title, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, launched in just about every store across the globe. And despite its semi-short campaign length, it appears most players will be hanging onto the title until well into the New Year.

I spoke with GameStop VP of Marketing Tony Bartel a little while back about this, and he says Call of Duty titles are rarely seen back at the store until about two months after its release.

"Typically, we don't see a lot of people trading back in their new games right away," Bartel told IGN. "In fact, when you look at our used sales, at any given time, less than four percent of those used sales come from new games launched in the last 60 days."

"But what we've found historically with the Call of Duty franchise, that percentage is actually even smaller."

GameStop revealed last week the company sold 2.5 million copies of Modern Warfare 2 in the first three days of sales. I recently called ten random GameStop stores located in the biggest cities in the U.S. and none had any used copies in stock, even with the recent releases of Assassin's Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2.

Another reason players may be hesitant to trade in the title could be because they simply ran out of other titles to offer up instead, as GameStop says the company will receive a huge influx of pre-owned stock due to the demand for Modern Warfare 2.

"For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, twenty percent of the product we sell will be funded in GameStop through credits from games people no longer play," Bartel added.

How long will Modern Warfare 2 be in your games library?

Easy gold
Put your most expensive item in the junk section in your inventory. Find a merchant, enter the "Junk" section in your inventory, highlight the expensive item, then press Y followed by A very quickly. If done correctly, your item will be sold at twice its value. It may require a few attempts. Buy it back, and repeat the process as many times as desired. It is best if you use two fingers, with one on Y and another on A so you can press them almost simultaneously. It is recommended you either do this with a merchant that you have not sold any junk to before, or buy back all the junk you previously sold. This speeds up the process enough so that you can double the gold as fast as possible. Additionally, if the merchant has an item more expensive than the one you are selling, buy it, and use that instead to increase the amount of gold you get. If you have the Blood Dragon Plate, this can be easily done with the first merchant.

Easy experience
You can use the "Easy gold" glitch to basically get unlimited experience. Once you save the life of the Arl of Redcliffe, a soldier of his will appear in your party's camp. There will be a box for donating to the army. Enter the screen, and select the first option to donate 30 gold. You can do this as many times as desired to get a good amount of experience from each donation. If you just keep pressing A then X repeatedly, you will keep quickly donating large sums of gold, skipping through the dialog screens, and getting a lot of experience quickly. If you start getting low on gold, perform the "Easy gold" glitch again with the merchant in your camp. Note: Be careful, as enemies will also level as you do. If you get too high of a level and do not have the correct equipment, you can be quickly defeated.

In Ostargar, do the "Tainted Blood" mission that is unlocked immediately before you become a Grey Warden. Collect the three Vials of Darkspawn Blood, but not the Grey Warden Treaties. Return to camp, talk to Duncan, and report "We have the blood, but not the scrolls." You will exit out of the conversation, but still get the experience for the mission. You can repeat this as many times as desired. It does not take long to reach the level 25 cap if you skip the conversations to speed up the process.

Note: This trick requires you have the Trap Making ability. In Lothering, go to the right after exiting Dane's Refuge (near the center of Lothering). There will be a quest giver by the name of Allison. She will ask you to make traps, and requires three traps to complete the quest. Once you complete the quest, you will get a moderate amount of experience and 50 silver. You can repeat this quest as many times as desired; however, the quest will become unavailable as you progress through the game. To keep repeating the quest, go back to Dane's Refuge, and buy Trap Triggers. He has an unlimited supply of them. As long as you have Trap Making, create Spring Traps. Spring Traps only cost approximately 3 silver to create, and she requires three traps each time. Thus, it only costs you roughly 9 silver for the quest.

To get extra experience points early in the game, go to the city of Denerim as soon as you leave Lothering. Then, enter the "Wonders of Thedas" building, and purchase the Archivist's Belt. While it is equipped, you will get an experience point boost for everything in your Codex. Books will increase from 50 to 75 experience points.

Duplicate items
This glitch allows you to duplicate gear, ingredients, potions, and other stuff. First, you need at least two of the item you want to duplicate. The glitch is basically the same as the "Easy gold" glitch. Thus, it is best to only have the items you want to duplicate in both your and the merchant's "Junk" inventory. This help speeds up and organize things. Put at least two of the item you want to copy in the "Junk" section of your bag. Go to any merchant, and press Y to sell all the junk in your bag. Then, select the item from the merchant's side, and buy back all but one of the item. Next, select it when it is in your inventory again. Press Y followed by A very quickly. This requires precise timing like the "Easy gold" glitch and may require a few attempts, but it becomes easy to do after a few tries. You can keep repeating the process until you have 99 of the item. Some items will show in the merchant's inventory as being one row of 99, and another row of a different number (for example, 33). Sometimes the extra items can be taken and kept; however, other times they will vanish from your inventory. Be careful about taking the correct row. If you have the "Warden's Keep" downloadable content, you can store unlimited items in the bottomless chest so you will always have more if you ever run out and do not want to keep using this glitch. This glitch should also work with books that add Skill or Talent points. When you get any of those books, wait until you have two of them so you can make unlimited copies and max out your characters.

Free Specialization books
Save the game, then buy a Specialization book from a vendor. The message "Specialization Unlocked" will appear. Then, load your saved game, and you will have the gold back that you spent for the book, but the specialization will still be unlocked.

When you first arrive at your party camp, you will see Bodahn Fennick, the Dwarf trader. Speak to him, and view his wares. You will find two Specialization books, Ranger and Templar. Save the game, then buy one to unlock that Specialization. Reload your game, and buy the other one. You will now have both specialties unlocked and still retain your gold after reloading your game again. This works with all Specialization books.

Extra storage
In Lothering, go towards a bridge on the edge of town. There will be a bridge where a Dwarven father and son are getting attacked. If you save and are nice to them, they will be in your party's camp when you arrive shortly afterwards. They are merchants, and the son is an enchanting savant. The father has good items to start. Buy the items, using the "Easy gold" glitch if needed. He never seems to lose what you sell him. You can basically use him as free storage. This works well for players without the "Warden's Keep" downloadable content's bottomless chest, or if you do not want to keep traveling to Soldier's Peak to retrieve your excess inventory.

Extra backpack in Ostagar
When you arrive in Ostagar, buy the Backpack from the Quartermaster. Note: You should have enough money all long as you collected sell-able items and gear during the beginning storyline. Successfully complete the quest where you and the other recruits enter the Wilds; make sure you explore the entire map. Successfully complete the "Joining" ritual, and become a Grey Warden. Before attending the meeting with Duncan and the King, go back to the Quartermaster, and there should be another Backpack available to purchase at the same price as before.

Mass Effect reference
There is a book titled "Load Limit Reached" that you can find in the Orzammar underground section "The Dead Trenches", near the "Legionnaire Shrine" at the end of a broken bridge. The first line in the book is "Mass will have an effect". It mentions a Dwarf named Shepard, which is the same name as the main character of Mass Effect.

Portal reference
Note: You must have Sten in your party for this trick to work. At the end of the game, if you choose to perform the ritual with Morrigan, you will go to the crowning of the new king or queen. After the dialogue with Alistair, you can walk around and talk to your companions. Find Sten, and he will say "Where is the cake? They promised there would be cake. The cake is a lie..."

Superman reference
The following event is random and occurs while traveling on the world map. You will encounter a farmer and his wife who find a baby in a meteor crash, right after it happens. They decide to take the baby and raise it as their own. You get the Meteor Ore the baby came in. It can be made into armor by Wade in Denerim. A good way to get this event to occur is from one of the Chantry Board missions in Redcliffe. Travel straight from Redcliffe to Refugees.

Easy gold
Put your most expensive item in the junk section in your inventory. Find a merchant, enter the "Junk" section in your inventory, highlight the expensive item, then press Triangle followed by X very quickly. If done correctly, your item will be sold at twice its value. It may require a few attempts. Buy it back, and repeat the process as many times as desired. It is best if you use two fingers, with one on Triangle and another on X so you can press them almost simultaneously.

If you just keep pressing X then Square repeatedly, you will keep quickly donating large sums of gold, skipping through the dialog screens, and getting a lot of experience quickly.

Press Triangle followed by X very quickly.
